Hikes and Other Events
The general public is invited to join us on hikes and other events. If a club or organization wishes to include one of our hikes as a formal activity on its schedule, we ask that it contact the leader in advance for permission. Times listed are departure times; please arrive at least 15 minutes before the listed time. Starting times are strictly observed and appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes/boots should be worn at all times.
Generally, our pace is moderate with opportunities for resting and sightseeing. Every attempt is made to assist and encourage hikers, but we cannot be responsible for their safety on the trail. Any rugged outdoor activity entails risk, and we expect all participants to rely on their own judgmet and good sense to take care of themselves and know their limitations. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Hikers are expected not to lag too far behind the main party.
Meetings are held at 7:00 pm the first Wednesday of the month at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, 140 South Ott Street, Allentown, Pa. Meetings include a discussion of the previous month’s activities, as well as upcoming activities. Each month, there is typically a presentation on a topic of interest. All members are invited and encouraged to schedule activities; we are a 100% volunteer organization, and it is up to members to keep the schedule filled.

Allentown Walk and Bach at Noon ConcertExplore Colonial and Revolutionary Allentown and enjoy a Bach at Noon Concert
Meet at Trout Hall at 4th and Walnut Streets in Allentown. This year is the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, so as we walk the original streets laid out by William Allen in 1762, we will explore the colonial village and its role during the Revolution as well as view the current redevelopment activity. This walk is on city sidewalks with stops to look at our surroundings. We will end our walk at St. John's Lutheran Church on S. 5th St. for the Bach At Noon concert. The concert is free, but donations are appreciated. Bring water and snacks. Rain on the morning of the even cancels the walk portion, but anyone interested in the concert can meet at the church at 11:50 a.m.

Hickory Run State Park 8-10 miles, Shades of Death & MoreExplore Hickory Run State Park in early summer
Meet at the new Park Office/Visitor Center at 8 am. We will explore multiple trails and hopefully experience some rhododendron tunnels, blooming mountain laurel, small waterfalls, and a view of the Lehigh River. There is over 1000' of elevation gain in the planned route. Trails will be rocky and rooty in spots and we will have multiple creek crossings. We will end with the beautiful and challenging (due to multiple creek crossings) Shades of Death Trail back to our starting point.
**Since this is an approximately 10 mile summer hike, participants are expected to bring at least 2 L of water as well as some type of electolytes (fast chews/gummies or electrolyte drink). Bring a trail lunch/snacks. Footwear with good traction is required and trekking poles or a hiking stick are recommended.
Other items to consider are sunscreen, bug spray, a hat, perhaps extra socks if you get wet feet. In the summer I prefer to not use waterproof shoes but rather shoes that drain and dry quickly.
If you are interested in cooling off in Sand Spring Lake we can take a walk over post-hike.

Sand Spring & Tom Lowe Trails Loop9.4 miles of strenuous hike
Description: The 9.4 mile hike begins at the PA State Game Lands 110 parking lot on Northkill Road and follows a game lands service road before transitioning onto the Sand Spring Trail (blue blazes), crossing Northkill Creek and climbing steadily alongside a stream to the historic rock-walled Sand Spring and the junction with the Tom Lowe Trail. The return follows the Tom Lowe Trail (orange blazes), descending steeply from the ridge, crossing several streams—including a wooden bridge near mile eight—and following Northkill Creek back to the parking area. Expect rocky footing in places, stream crossings and come prepared with sturdy footwear, snacks, lunch, and plenty of fluids; the hike will be canceled in the event of adverse weather.

Orienteering HikeOrienteering at Hickory Run State Park.
We’ll start with a brief introduction to orienteering, covering essential skills and strategies.
After the lesson, we’ll break into smaller groups based on the distance you’d like to hike. Whether you’re looking for a quick 1 to 3 mile stroll or you’re up for a more challenging 10 mile adventure, there’s a group for you! This way, everyone can choose the pace and distance that suits them best and fully enjoy the experience. If you have a compass bring it along. If not, there will be compasses available for you to use.
Since we’ll be bushwhacking off the trails, tick protection is a must. Bring water and a snack.
