(Cancelled) Eckville Shelter History HikeThis hike is rescheduled to May 2nd, 2026
This historical 4 hike to the Eckville Appalachian Trail Shelter begins at Pine Swamp Road and follows a time-honored blue-blazed route steeped in Appalachian Trail history. The climb winds steadily through mature forest and rocky outcrops before connecting with the Appalachian Trail itself, where generations of hikers have passed through this corridor of Pennsylvania’s Blue Mountain. The destination, the Eckville Appalachian Trail Shelter, is one of the oldest shelters on the AT and uniquely includes a caretaker’s residence—making it a living link to the early stewardship of the Trail. This hike offers not only a rewarding ascent and scenic ridge walking, but also a meaningful opportunity to experience a landmark that reflects the enduring spirit, community, and volunteer legacy of the Appalachian Trail.
Please bring snacks, fluids and an interest in learning about the history of the Appalachian Trail and the Eckville area and Shelter in Berks County. |

Meet at the Illick's Mill parking lot at 100 Illick's Mill Rd. in Bethlehem where we will begin our 2 mile walk on the Monocacy Trail to the Central Moravian Church (73 W. Church St.) for a Bach at Noon concert. The concert is free, but voluntary donations are appreciated. After the concert, we will follow the same route to walk back to our cars. Bring snacks to be able to eat on the move as the weather conditions may not allow a stop for lunch. The Monocacy Trail is flat and has a good walking surface (paved, gravel, grass). Steady rain or snow or icy conditions on the morning of the event will cancel the hike portion of this event, but participants can meet in the balcony of the church for the concert. |

"Hike" the roads through Trexler PreserveHike some hilly but snow/slush-free roads through Trexler.
We will leave from the LV Zoo parking lot and go down to the Jordan Creek where we will cross the footbridge and walk the road south of the car-crossing to the Zoo exit. This involves a long, steady uphill climb, then a traverse by the bison enclosure, then a long steady downhill to the exit gate at Game Preserve Road. We will then turn around and go back the way we came. This is roughly 6 miles. If anyone is interested in going further we can walk the road going the opposite direction. Dress in layers and bring comfy shoes, water, and a snack if you want to join me in a few extra miles. This will be a brisk walk, keeping close to a 3.5 mph pace Details
